Following the successful launch of this program, which culminated in the formation of the Fire Prevention and Fighting Brigade made up of young people from the Mapuche Vera, Curruhuinca, and Cayún communities, the work continues with the training of two new brigades, this time in the Linares and Atreuco communities.
In collaboration with the Provincial Fire Management System of Neuquén, the already established brigade successfully participated in the suppression and control of more than 20 fires in the area during the last two seasons. In addition, this specialized team of young people is about to take important exams to be properly qualified to work at the national level.
The Brigade, which has a vehicle equipped with forestry tools and a 600-liter tank for quick fire attack, serves a network of fields and Mapuche communities in the area. The tasks include: patrolling for early fire detection; rapid response and attack in the event of a fire; fire prevention through forestry practices (strategic thinning and pruning); mapping of risk zones and surveying of water sources; and logistical support to institutions responsible for fire fighting.
“This year, the work continues with the formation of two new brigades, made up of members from the Linares and Atreuco communities. These training courses not only represent a moment of learning and preparation but also mark the beginning of a closer and more meaningful collaboration between our Foundation and the communities,” emphasized Maximiliano Knüll, President of the Tierras Patagónicas Foundation.
“Once the training is completed, we will establish two new brigades for fire prevention and fighting, one in the Linares Community and another in the Atreuco Community, which will play a vital role in protecting their people and their natural environment, providing essential services such as early fire alerts, quick response, and logistical support in coordination with the Provincial Fire Management System,” added Knüll.
It is worth noting that, since early 2023, we have been working on the preparation and operation of the Fire Monitoring and Operations Base, located on almost 8,000 square meters along Route 237, near Chapelco Airport. The goal is also to create a Center for Studies and Training where both members and non-members of the Foundation can be trained on environmental issues, with a special focus on the use of technology and professional development.
